REGISTRATION AND PRE-COURSE INSTRUCTIONS

INTRODUCTION
The course structured for;

  • Training and assessment in skills to perform harness based work at heights unsupervised, to supervise entry level and other operators, and to participate in first response rescue.

Theory

  • Legislation

  • Work at Height Regulations

  • Health and Safety at Work Act

  • Personal Protective Equipment regulations

  • AS/NZ Standards

  • EN Standards

  • Hazard analysis and Risk assessment

  • The categories for safe work at height -

    • Work restraint

    • Work positioning

    • Fall arrest

  • Certificates of conformity and trace-ability

  • Inspection and record keeping procedures

  • Limitations of use and when to retire from service

  • Strengths and characteristics of equipment

  • The importance of rescue provision

  • What constitutes an unprotected edge?

  • What constitutes steep ground and when do work positioning techniques become necessary

  • The importance of avoidance of hazards whenever possible

  • Correct risk assessment when setting up work restraint systems

  • The use of work positioning in conjunction with fall arrest systems

  • The use of double lanyards climbing and structure mobility

  • The importance of personal safety whilst carrying out a rescue.

  • The problems associated with suspension trauma.

  • The importance of casualty management.

COURSE SYLLABUS
Practical


The topics are;

  • Correct fitting and adjustment of fall arrest harnesses by all delegates.

  • Ladder ascent and descent using inertia blocks.

  • Ladder ascent and descent using in-situ permanent systems (only if available).

  • Ladder ascent and descent using temporary systems.

  • The use of fall arrest systems.

  • Correct rigging of Anchor straps.

  • Correct installation of horizontal safety lines.

  • The safe use of restraint lines.

  • Safe use of Karabiners.

  • The use of a self-locking descender to abseil.

  • The use of a rescue kit containing a self-locking descender to access a casualty and evacuate them down to safety.

  • The use of a rescue kit with raising and lowering capability.

COURSE SUMMARY
In addition to the theoretical tests carried out in Module 01 all delegates will be monitored by the trainer throughout the practical sessions. Any concerns will be addressed by delegate and trainer on a continual basis.

TRAINING OUTCOME

  • Statement of Attainment of either RIIOHS204A Work Safely at Heights, CPCCCM1006A Work Safely at Heights or CPCPCM2015A Work Safely on Roofs for all delegates who complete the course

  • Certificate of Attendance for Rescue from Towers Masts and Structures

  • Certificate of Attendance for Height Safety Supervisor

  • ID card for all delegates (SpanSet recommends retraining every 3 years).
